Recent developments around the F-35 reveal growing tensions between the U.S. and its allies:
On 30 June 2021, the Federal Council announced its type decision in favour of the F-35A. Reactions ranged from approval to sharp criticism. On 31 August 2021, the GSoA launched the "Stop F-35" initiative. The SFAO already expressed doubts about the fixed price in November 2021.

The Ukraine war from 24 February 2022 changed the security policy debate. The Armed Forces Dispatch 2022 passed the Council of States on 2 June and the National Council on 15 September. On 19 September 2022 — four days after the parliamentary decision — Switzerland signed the purchase contracts.

Federal Councillor Amherd learned of the additional costs in summer 2024 but only informed the full Federal Council in December. Worldwide, Lockheed Martin halted F-35 deliveries from July 2023 to July 2024 due to TR-3 software problems.
